Experience the delight in creating a highly dimensional relief carving of a nature scene. This workshop will introduce the technique of high relief carving by utilizing built up pieces to create impressive displays of dimensional sculpture.

Over the last 30 years there has been a movement in America to expand the concept of architectural carving beyond classical embellishment to include pictorial landscapes and wildlife. This goes hand in hand with the modern movement toward greater environmental consiousness and an appreciation of the natural world around us. Carved natural elements can be a dramatic accent to any wood project.  Gavin will demonstrate the techniques he uses to create the sculptural doors, mantels, beams and wall sculpture he is known for.

Students will learn how to make patterns created from photographs, utilizing photo processing software and the use of layering for planning and visualizing a carving. Use of hand and power tools including the router, high speed die grinders, mini grinders, flexshaft tools and angle grinders for fast removal of wood will be covered. Finishing and the technique of airbrush staining to enhance depth and detail will  also be discussed.

Students will be required to bring their own tools as well as a solid or laminated slab with matching pieces for buiding up the carving . In addition, there are recommended tools that are available from Gavin.

" I’ve put this post off because words can not adequetately describe the experience of taking a class under the tutelage of Ron Ramsey. I will try to do it justice. I took a high relief carving class from Ron Ramsey (Telecarver) this past weekend. Myself and 3 other carvers arrived at his fantastic workshop Thursday night, then spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday learning the ins and outs of high relief carving. It was not just a carving experience it was a life experience. Ron or Ramsey as everyone calls him (even his wife) is a master carver. He has spent 38 years making a living out of what most of us do as a hobby. And he has done very well. His work is incredible. Ramsey’s ability to impart knowledge to another carver is extraordinaire. I came away from his class knowing I could make sculptural carvings that I would be proud to make a part of my home. No, they won’t look like Ramsey’s but as I said they will be works of art that I will be proud of. Ramsey has developed a unique, matter of fact method of arriving at a finished carving that ordinary individuals can accomplish and those with a little talent can excel at. 
Not only was the carving exceptional the entire weekend was. Ramsey and his wonderful wife Karen brought 4 carvers into their home for a 72 hr once in a lifetime event. Karen, an artist in her own right as jewelry artist ensures every guest has an exceptional experience. We carved, we learned, we had gourmet meals, we talked and drank wine into the wee hours by the outdoor fireplace hand hewn by the Ramsey’s at the beautiful, secluded 30 acres in the Sierra Mountains. It truly was an exceptional experience. If you ever have the opportunity to participate in one of Ramsey’s classes by all means seize it. You will not be disappointed ".

A $250 deposit is required to secure a space in the class.  Please indicate which session you plan to attend.

The balance is due 45 days prior to the start of the class. Reservations will be on a first deposit received basis. If you need to cancel, I require that you send a dated, signed letter requesting a refund.  It must be postmarked no later than 45 days prior to the start of the class.  There is a $50 cancellation fee.  If you cancel after that, there will be no refund unless I can fill your spot.
